got a vm on my work phone from a man named David Steven. Saying they have a legal case against me and that it would be put on my social security number. and if i did not call back i would loose my job and it would affect my families jobs. (saved vm as an email for proof). he had a very stong accent and i could hardly understand him.
so i called back and his supervisor (whatever) named George Martin answered. i told him that David said some threatening things on the vm. he ignored my statement and would not let me talk. he informed me that there is and investigative case against me (gave me a case #) and i have to send him a credit or debit card and a copy of my ID card via fax or they will not give me anything in writing.
i asked for an address and business name so i could send a money order or bank certified check and he said they do not take cash, checks or money orders. oh but i could get a prepaid credit card and load the money on it to pay.
he said i have 3 options
1. pay in full
2. pay in 2 installments but there will be an additional $200.00 for interest on top of what i owe.
3. go to court, mind you the court they names does not exist.
at the end of this conversation he was very mean and rude.
i wish i knew how to research this better i am not giving up till i find out what this is and who is going it.
i also think its interesting as both these men have very strong hard to understand accents but they both have a first name for their first and last name.
i have searched the numbers but unless i'm willing to pay a fee i can not get the info.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
