I just got the same call at 11:04am PST. It comes from Flushing, New York and the number is the same 347-828-9692.
It was a recorded message from someone with an accent and was obviously a complete scam. The message said it was from the "U.S. Treasury" threatening legal action against me and some that some "Barrister" must talk to me about some imagined "case."
First off all, we don't call "lawyers" "Barristers" here in the U.S. and second, the U.S.Treasury would never call anyone about anything. It was so clearly a scam that I hung up during the recorded message. Then my couriousity got the better of me and I dialed the number.
When I called the number back and a human male answered. He had an accent from what I believe might be the Philippines... or somewhere in Southeast Asia who and learned to speak English from a Brit. The accent was pretty easy to place. I couldn't stop myself from angrily saying what an A$*hole he was to try to scam people out of money and that he should be ashamed of himself.
Obviously these scammers are working the phones hard today. I just hope they don't find some really stupid unaware people who think this is real.
To anyone posting here who has received this scam call .... why sit back and take their BS scam? Instead why don't you turn the tables on these scammers? I respectfully suggest you all do the following as I just did..
1) First enter the numbers *67 before you dial this number to block your own phone number from their scamming eyes.
2) then dial the scammers, dial the number they are using and are answering today 347-828-9692
3) Give them a fictitious name and say you are from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and you are calling this number because you have gotten a lot of complaints about someone making calls from this number and impersonating someone from the U.S. Treasury.... which is a Federal crime.
4) Tell them the call is being traced and FBI agents are on their way.
Reporting back in:
I just called the number back again using *67 to hide my number and for the first time I got a recorded message that this number was no longer in service. The first few times I did it the same guy with the same Filippino accent answered. This time I got a recording that the "number was out of service."
So, I guess my phone calls telling them the FBI was investigating got to them enough so that they stopped using this phone number. For the time being at least.
I'm now imaging them packing up and running out of the back room they call from in fear of the FBI... I wish.
Next time you get a phone scam calling you don't sit back and take it. Dial *67 to block your own number, call them back, and tell them you are with the FBI and are coming to investigate the because it is a Federal Crime to impersonate a Federal official.
