The name of the company is Certified Document Center. There web address is certifieddocumentcenter.com. They claim that they will help a person fill out difficult applications in exchange for a ridiculous fee. The guy who hooked me asked for all kinds of financial and personal info. This particular scam was that they would fill out a 16 page application for student loan consolidation on my behalf in exchange for $899. They required the entire fee be paid in just 3 payments over the next 10 weeks. I said I don't have that kind of loot. He told me to use a credit card. I said sure, and then pay 24% interest for something that is supposed to REDUCE my debt? I told him I wanted to think about it overnight and he almost freaked because he wanted my credit card number right then and there.
What was the bait? He promised that if I paid $83/month, the Department of Education would pay $800/month on my behalf and I would be able to accelerate payoff of my loans. He said the $899 fee they charged was for convenience and to save me the trouble of doing it myself.
I called the Department of Education and asked them about the application in question. They said the actual application is 3 pages with 13 pages of instructions. He told me how to go to the proper website and download a PDF of the application that I can fill out for free. Of course, he also said that there is no guarantee I would qualify for the program that the salesman talked about. The problem is, they don't tell you about the $899 fee until AFTER you give them all your info. That's when you start getting all kinds of unwanted calls. FML.
