My mother taught me a long time ago that if people are purposely trying to hurt you then they are not your friend and you don't have to be nice. Go ugly early, scream, shout, and make them miserable.
Shakespeare understood this as well: Get a pound of flesh. Make it sufficiently lawfully but thoroughly unpleasant for them that they'll think twice of doing it again.
