Not sure I understand how they are scamming anyone but I got same message as everyone else.  Kind of hot sounding woman on the other end so I tried chatting her up.

I got the same message, from "Sara," saying, "hey, are you going to call or what? 401-441-5929." The message was in red-colored text, suggesting it was urgent. I googled the area code and prefix, which said it was in Cranston, RI. I don't know anyone there, and I don't onow anyone by the name of "Sara." I sent her a polite text reply telling her I didn't recognize her first name, asking if she could give me a little more background to help me remember what it was about, etc. After I sent my reply, my BlackBerry made a xylophone-like noise and the words "Message Status: Transaction error - unknown service" appeared. That suggests to me that my reply "bounced."

Who, exactly, is this "Sara," what does she supposedly want, and (if it is in fact a scam) what does she (or whoever sent the message) really want? Is there anything I need to do to protect my BlackBerry from some kind of virus, or attempt to copy or steal information I've saved on there?

WHY, for heaven's sake, do people DO things like this?? If it's a scam - and it's taken up at least several minutes of the time of every person on this thread - it's a major nuisance when all those minutes, spent by each of us, are added up. Kind of reminds me of an old MAD Magazine article that showed readers how to "get back" at a government bureaucracy by making some kind of very elaborate (but meaningless) inquiry or request to dozens of its employees, who would then supposedly end up calling each other to figure out what it was all about. The article ended urged readers to continue with the scheme until "everyone [i.e., every single bureaucrat] is involved in this FUN GAME" [capitals in original]. When I was nine years old, I thought the article and it suggestions to be incredibly sophisticated as well as hysterically funny - but somehow, I'm not laughing NOW... :-(
