I pick up. They ask for the person to whom the phone is registered (they are long dead). I say nothing. They hang on for a few minutes without hanging up. Eventually, I make a slight noise, and they identify themselves as some kind of disabled police charity. I believe they identify the telemarketing firm as Corporations for Character. I respond to their questions with funny noises. Based on their lack of reaction, I determine that I am speaking to a robot. They soon give up and hang up.
Caller ID is just the number. They leave no message.
I call back after business hours (using *67 to block my number). I hear the following, "Hi, you have reached the customer service line. We're calling on behalf of the Disabled Police and Sheriffs Foundation. The reason we are calling today is for our fundraising drive. This call may be monitored or recorded for quality assurance. If you'd like this number placed on our do-not-call list, please, press 1. If you need further assistance, please, press 2 now." (I never do the do-not-call list as it can actually make things worse.)
I checked them out with CharityWatch.org. They also use the names: American Police & Sheriffs Association, DPSF, and Police Officers Safety Association. Nothing like a bunch of aliases to inspire confidence.
There was a link to an article that lists them as the 35th worst American charity:
Their stated mission includes education, grants and improving the image of law enforcement. It appears they do little at all; only 1% of their budget goes to direct cash aid.
