This was a poorly executed "Grandma/Grandpa" scam. The evil caller will try to convince you that they are your grandchild (even if you don't have any grandchildren) and separate you from your cash. The "grandchild" will pretend to be in trouble somewhere in the world and count on your generosity to bail them out.
This was really very poorly executed. I expected much better. You would think that with the millions that these snakes get from unsuspecting marks, they could hire some better voice actors.
