Bonita, did you ever find out about Total Check Recovery.  I got a call from them but a different phone number.  I cannot find anything about this group.  Said they were trying to collect a check from 2005.  Would love to know what  you found out

There's nothing important to find out. Your caller is just one of the dozens of frauds working in the Atl. area. They are beneath contempt. We see reports about the dirt-bags here every day.
People don't get calls about bad checks years after they were supposedly written. Particularly checks that are 10 years old. I could go in to the legalities. It's not necessary. Your caller is a scammer. It's just that simple. If you take another of their calls demand the callers physical address & demand written proof of their claim by mail. NOT e-mail or fax. The caller will refuse to give you a valid address. If the caller does supply one I can guarantee that it will come back as a box at a UPS store. Probably in Norcross, Sandy Springs or Douglasville GA. It might come back as another location in the Atl. area but those are the current hot-spots. Cheap rent in hundreds of empty strip-malls.
When the semi-literate fraud starts making threats of arrest or law suits tell him, or her, that you have the number to your local clerk of courts office right at hand. If the caller claims to be a process server, laugh at him. Process servers NEVER call ahead of time. They don't make appointments, they don't deliver messages. EVER! Check your local regulations regarding the lawful service of process. In the county of my primary residence legal process can only be served by a deputy sheriff. It varies by state and county. A call to your local clerk of court will explain all.
By the time you have finished reading this there will be people digging in to "Total Check Recovery". Stay tuned for "the next exciting episode". I have a deep abiding hatred of the frauds in the Atl. area. I'm not alone.
Live Well.

Diane -

Please read Gunnar's entire post for some very good and important information.
Here is a little more:
I could not find a "Total Check Recovery" site on the internet.  The closest I found was "Global Check Recovery" ... but they are in Arizona, NOT Georgia (the area code of the caller).

There is also a "Total Recovery" ad ... but that is for recovering data from hard drives.

Bottom line:
A phone call is NOT legally sufficient evidence of debt.
Google "FDCPA" to learn more.
