I received a call from Rebecca too, who transferred me to a man with a Georgian accent. Tried telling me that I was going to be served today. He kept trying to read a bunch of information to me, so I told him to stop and that I would get all of that when I was served. He said "well you aren't just going to be served, you are also going to be arrested", and got upset when I said "okay, I'll just deal with that then.". He said "EXCUSE ME?" and I repeated it. He then hung up on me. Oh and he had the wrong county name to file in. Nice try buddy.

Law enforcement is not in the business of collecting debt.  It is illegal to call people pretending to be a police officer.  So right there, you have two red flags screaming "scammer"!  Debt is a civil matter in the US, not criminal, so no one is going to be arrested - red flag #3.  No one calls you up and tells you that you'll be arrested or served court papers - the cops or court process server just show up.

Report the call to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General.  When these scammers call back, tell them that on the advice of your attorney (even if you don't have one) you're recording all calls they make to you for use in a lawsuit against them for multiple violations of federal law (the FDCPA).

Bottom line - if a caller refuses to mail (not email or fax) proof via the USPS that you owe a debt to them, they are scammers.  Again, legitimate, law-abiding debt collections agencies do not issue illegal threats to people - they have no problem mailing proof of debt to you.

Got a call saying that I owed some money for writing bad checks. Gave me an address that I never lived at before. Said that they were trying to get in contact with me since March 29th 2013 @ 12:57pm. Said they called me 8 times. I never gotten a call from them until today. Said that I had 4 hours to solve this issue or they were going to have me arrested, be a hold on my child support and my son's SSI check. Which is something they can not do. SO I went and talked to the deputy sheriff in my county and they searched the number and told me it was a scam and that they next time they call tell them to have the papers sent over to the sheriffs office.  They called back to ask if I had came up with any money, I told them no and said that the deputy sheriffs office wants you to send over my case file. She said okay and they would send the warrant for my arrest as well.

PO'd!!
Rebecca Turner called me then referred me to Jennifer Wright--I am amazed at how similar the script is with everyone!!  When I demanded she said the name of the company was "National Check Mediation Services".

She was rude/nasty/etc--said they have 4 criminal felony charges (writing bad checks) outstanding against me and they didnt have to inform me, but were doing it as a "courtesy".  She couldn't tell me the date the payday loan was taken out or the address I lived at then.  She had an employer's name from 2002--who is now out of business, when I pointed out that she had not done her research, she got really pissed @ me.  Said they were going to pull my income taxes and get my current employer's address and arrest me Monday--I told her to go ahead.  She said I thought I was "above the law" when I asked her for proof that it was my debt.  The worst part is they are calling my 80 yr old parents trying to find me!

She started screaming at me and I hung up, she called back and I told her not to call me any more, but to call my attorney and gave her the name /number.  She called me back again and said she was not calling this attorney because they were a bankruptcy lawyer and this was now a criminal case, so she said she would notify the public defender's office and have them ready for me when they arrested me.  Right....you're gonna do that for me.  And she couldn't tell me what county the charges were filed in--just said Michigan.  Umm, yeah, in 2002 I lived in Maryland.

Seriously?!  I was a  little freaked at first and worked up--but I know this is a scam.  And nothing about a payday loan shows on my credit report--if I ever took one out it was over 10 yrs ago, but I'm pretty sure I did not take one out.  Next time they call I'm going to tell them I am recording the call.

I can't get over this--
