I just opened a checking account with them yesterday and they called today. I don't owe them any money, so it can't be for collections. Strange, because my fiance opened one a few months ago and they didn't call him.
I do have an account with Banco Popular and trust me its a collection department and they are always putting my payment in the escrow account even when they see there is a coupon slip and the check states the monthly payment. Never! Ever! get a loan with this bank I've had them for 7 yrs and this is a monthly issue.
It is from Banco Popular collection department, if you missed a payment. If you ever make a payment over the phone, first ask them what is the loan #. If they cannot tell you your loan number, then you want to be suspicious. That's the first thing I verified with them before making a payment (they got my loan # right; indeed they asked me the last four of my ssn to verify me - so I wanted to verify them also).
