Similar story but the the same ruse. He even used local addresses and names he had pulled out of the telephone book that "sound black". It was quite disturbing and like others I was torn between helping someone I thought I had met. But when pressed for details his story began to change and fall apart. Thank God we did not send money.
Received calls and correspondences from this guy who claimed to be Scott Krone. FRAUDulent attempt to have money wired to him via Western Union. Claimed his mother died in a DUI accident and needed money to "come home".
BEWARE, nothing but a FRAUD
The number shows up on caller ID as Anne Conley. The caller identifies himself as Scott Crone. He claims he met me at church a few weeks ago. His story is that his mother was killed by a DUI, and he has questions about how God could let such a thing happen. On the way home from the funeral his car broke down (it threw a rod) and he and his family are stranded trying to get home. He wants me to wire money ($124.12) through Western Union for bus tickets. His claim was that he found our church bulletin in the trunk of his car and so he felt like maybe God is cutting him a break. He gave me a local street in Yanceyville, NC (a nearby town) where he claimed to live, but could not provide the phone number of someone who could vouch for his story. He claims that since he just moved to the area a few weeks ago, there is no one who can vouch for him. He also claims there is 2 hour deadline before the next bus comes.
It is a VERY convincing story - if I had not run across this website and seen that he has called several people with the same story over the past two weeks, I would have wired money.
I received a similar call from Scott Crone on the evening of March 15. He said he had visited our church with his daughters Jessica and Denise. We run about 180 in church and I would remember two girls like that. I didn't. I also couldn't find an obituary for his mother online; this post came up instead. I think he knew I was on to him and he hung up before he could ask for money.
