Don't worry Kim, these guys are frauds.  The received your information from an application that you filled out for a pay-day loan.  There is no action that they are going to take on you, because of several reasons.  1) They are scam artists 2) They are operating outside the US and do not represent any US company 3) They break 3 federal laws just in their introduction " Hello this is (insert some fictious "American sounding name") calling from the Federal Law Office of the American Legal System".

Collectors are not allowed to falsely represent themselves, especially imply that they have some sort of ties to the government.  Also, if you ask these imposters to produce evidence of the debt, they will not.  This also is not allowed by law, nor would it make any sense for you to listen any further to their conversation.

What their scam is, they hope that when they recite your social security number (yes, that DO have that information) that you will be scared enough to pay whatever amount they ask you to pay.  They then ask for you to fax them a letter with your credit card information that authorizes them to make the charge.  Once they have that, they have their scam in place.

My suggestion is, do not apply for payday loans online.  And with the pranksters that already have your information, either don't answer, hang up, or play the game right back to them.  My personal favorite is to answer the phone with "Attoney General's Office"...

[***] the payday loan scammers
In certain states your wages cannot be garnished for certain liabilities. For instance, if you owe taxes, they will garnish your wages, if you owe child support and have been a deadbeat parent, they will garner your wages, however, there are some jurisdictions that will not garnish your wages for certain unsecured debt.

More input from FAQ Farmers:

Florida but only if you are head of household.

South Carolina, too!

Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas do not allow wage garnishment for creditor debt. Florida does not have specific laws prohibiting the action, but does have laws that make it very difficult for wage garnishment against the "head of household."

Kansas - Special "purchased paper" law. Basically, if an account is sold to another company *BEFORE* judgment, a wage garnishment is not allowed. If an account is sold to another company *AFTER* judgment, then a wage garnishment is allowed
