We just got a voicemail for my wife, so I'm reading this blog.
I can see it has been going for some time and a lot of people have been harassed - has anyone lost money with this scam? Why isn't the police arresting them and closing this down?
What is the right course of action against them - I'm assuming we will now receive a number of offensive calls. I'm phoning San Jose Police Dept....
Called, used my name, and said there were legal actions "going against my name." Heavy accent of unknown origin. Advised me to call back and said I should have an attorney lined up if I was not able to call back. Fortunately, I found this site before attempting to call them and find out what the real deal was.
I called the police department and found that this scam has been going around a lot, and they said to just ignore them. They wouldn't take my complaint unless I actually lost money in this scam. The officer advised me to report it to FTC.gov
I blocked them from ever calling again from that number, but I know they will just get another MagicJack, or some other VOIP device and call again someday.
