Actually waited until 9:45 to call me ! The call started the same way as others have reported - i.e. trying to "guilt me" by saying something like "...you're hard to contact, etc. etc." (that didn't work). Then she went into her well-rehearsed spiel about "collecting for the ladies with breast cancer, blah blah blah". I then asked her WHAT EXACTLY she/they were doing for "the ladies with breast cancer". She replied that "they" make a financial contribution to the victims, and provide them "information". (full disclosure - I'm a retired "problem solver" with Federal law enforcement, and a former insurance investigator). My investigation has discovered that one of these ersatz "breast cancer charities" makes a one-time financial contribution of $500 to any woman who contacts them claiming to be a breast cancer victim. THAT is the beginning, and the end, of their "financial contribution" This particular "charity" has collections/contributions totaling somewhere around $14 to $18 million, and a total "paid out" to the victims of somewhere around $40,000 !! (Not these fine people, of course - they're all a bunch of choir boys - heh, heh, lol) As a cancer survivor, I can tell you - you can't cure, or even treat, cancer with "information". As a trained investigator, I'm not saying this whole thing is fraud, or even barely legal. But, it simply doesn't pass the "smell test". Before you give your hard-earned $ to someone like this (a voice over the phone) you have to ask, and answer 1 simple question - Is this REALLY where you want your charitable contributions to go ?
"dlw" conducted some research, and found that "...67% of 'donations' is retained ..." by this ersatz "charity". Someone else on this site (I wish I could remember who) reported that either this, or some other "charity" has raised tens of millions of $, while actually paying out $140,000 - more or less. All of this in the name of "breast cancer" !! BTW - good job(s) on the research. I believe those conclusions. "Breast Cancer" is the hot button issue de jour. I'm a retired "problem solver" with Federal law enforcement. My voice is distinctive, I'm told it has a "forceful edge", and, as such, easily recognized. I believe most, if not all, of these solicitations from these ersatz "charities" originate from the same source. I have received 2 calls from these scammers just today. My "hello" has been met with "stunned silence", i.e. voice recognition, then disconnect. Probably remembered who I am, and ran like hell. The lesson here is - if they are REALLY legit, why are they "spoofing" caller ID in the first place, then running and hiding? (the answer to both questions is obvious). While these ersatz charities may (emphasis on "may") be barely legal, you must ask yourself one elementary question - is this REALLY where you want your hard-earned money to be donated? I mean, REALLY?
This number calls me every day at work. A couple of times I answered as the number is similar to legit business lines. Each time there is a short delay and the lady on the phone uses my first name as if we are great friends. Apparently this call has to do with breast cancer awareness. Who knows if it is legit.
The more people REPORT the 'unwanted numbers' (there is a section for this) with www.donotcall.gov - the more they WILL stop.
I have found reporting numbers usually stops the calls (from numbers I report).
Everyone has their own way to deal with it (usually without putting down others).
