RECEIVED CALL ON MY CELL PHONE FROM SOMEONE WITH A STRONG INDIAN ACCENT ASKING ME IF I COULD DISCUSS A SERIOUS LEGAL MATTER. CALLER CLAIMED TO BE KEN THOMAS WITHT HE UNITED NATIONS LEGAL DEPARTMENT AT 111 CENTER STREET NEW YORK, NY 10013.  I TOLD HIM, "NO. I KNOW THAT THIS IS AN EXTORTION CALL, AND I AM REPORTING YOU TO THE POLICE."  THEN I HUNG UP ON HIM.  I ACTUALLY RECOGNIZED THE VOICE OF THIS PERSON AS SOMEONE WHO CALLED BEFORE CLAIMING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE FROM ANOTHER FAKE LAW FIRM IN CALIFORNIA.

This is a scam. They get your information from you filling out information for online applications etc. Then they try to get money out of you. When they ask to speak with you or your legal representative tell them they can talk to your lawyer, even if you dont have one. If you try to argue with them they get hostile and start cursing at you. They call me every couple of months, I tell them to talk to my lawyer, or to go ahead and file their lawsuit, and they leave me alone for a while. Beware, if you filled out an application and provided references they will call them. Sometimes telling them what they tell you, sometimes telling them that you have stolen their identity. Guess it depends on their mood.

Caller keeps harrassing me at work after harrassing me at home. He first identified himself as Officer James Marsh from California then it was I am from the State Dept Federal Credit Union then to I am from the United Nations. I have had my attorney call this gentleman and he admitted that in fact he was calling from Pakistan and hung up on her. My attorney immedietely called this gentleman back and he said he was Mac but could not understand the last name. He would not divulge the reason for calling and promised not to call my employer anymore although this person has promised this in the past. I have talked to this state dept-united nations-california LAPD officer and he will hang up on me if I dont give him my personal information which he already has the last four digits of my ss# and my and my employers phone number. I am a law abiding citizen and I need to know how I put a stop to this nonsense?

I think the scam is to scare you with legal threats to repay a non-existent payday loan. Previous posters William Reyes and Mary Miller are probably part of the scam, they've salted this page with positive comments and you can see where they're going - legal department, legal charges, etc. 800notes is rife with complaints of this type of scam, I've read many of them and can assure you this reeks of the same. The caller has hostile intentions. Do not give any info out or money away. Report your calls to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG. Buy a whistle or air horn and use it, God will forgive.
