Received this same call. Indian male with a heavy accent told me to call back and speak to an Alec Jones and gave me a reference number. I knew this didn't seem right but they keep calling. I called back the number and spoke to an Indian woman with a thick heavy accent. She told me that they notified me by certified mail numerous times and that I was going to be arrested for tax fraud. I am an intelligent person and tried to squeeze info out of her. She read off an alleged affidavit which didn't specify anything. I asked her to provide me with other info on me to see if she had the right person. She gave me my name and full mailing address but nothing else. She told me the errors were for 4 consecutive years and said that I didn't report my income correctly. I told her it was impossible and that I file jointly with my wife. I asked her why aren't you going after my wife as well and she said the problem is only with my taxes. This confirmed that this is a scam. If I am filing a joint return and there were issues, both my wife and I would be accountable I something wasn't reported or falsely reported. I told the woman that this is impossible and that is not how the IRS operates. She then said they will mail everything to me and hung up the phone. Whatever you do, do not give out your social security number to these people when they call.
I believe the guy named Ben Williams was asking for details saying he is from IRS. When I said IRS never calls over the phone, he threatened that I will know on Monday when the Sheriff comes to my door. Seems like a scam during the tax season by creating fear and forcing folks to give up the information.
My husband got a call from a guy with a thick Indian accent on his cell phone! He asked him if he received the papers he sent to our house! My husband kept asking him questions and he hung up! Don't get fooled!
Keep getting calls from this number claiming to be someone from the IRS. Total scam. I have blocked the number on my phone but they still keep leaving voicemails. So annoying.
10 minutes ago from a Steve Butler from IRS. Claiming an irregularity from my income tax return. Asked for my tax attorney's name and phone number. I told him IRS do not call, IRS only send notification letter and I will wait till I get notified. He finally hung up. Called from 415-251-4974, heavy Indian accent.
