Got a call from "999950" saying they were from Dell Support and that there was something wrong with my computer's hard drive. The weird thing is that they knew a lot about my recent purchase of a Dell and even a couple of support calls I made when I was setting it up.
I asked for their names and they were "Sean" and his manager "John" though their accents indicated that English was their second language. They said they were calling from San Francisco on Market Street but when I asked where because I'm from SF, he didn't tell me.
"John" the manager said that if I didn't do this whatever they wanted me to do, my "beautiful computer would disappear."
Southeast Asian called this week saying my computer was infected and their server was receiving messages from my machine. Their pitch adapted as I described events they didn't expect. They told me yes, they're from Microsoft. They discovered I have a Mac and gave me a story about needing to re-certify a security license or the computer would be blacklisted in the next hour and law enforcement would arrest me for using an unlicensed computer. They also told me they were selling Applecare renewals - anything to get my money.
Said they were calling from Windows and needed to fix my computer, URGENTLY! Asked which computer in my house was "infected", short pause then the reply "all of them". What IP addresses? Said he has a DS?? number and knew my computer was infected... Got annoyed and hung up.
