I just received a call from this number and they actually left a message. There were several suspicious flags that rose from the call. The caller, Maria Tam, asked for my wife (Flag 1, wife never uses my phone), and stated she was calling on behalf of Great West Life. Maria went on to say it was in connection to "Her Majesty the Queen" (Flag 2), some mumbled words, and "the President of TD Bank" (Flag 3). The call was regarding an application (Flag 4) and a response was time sensitive (Flag 5). They provided a toll free number and reference number. I didn't bother writing it down.
This is not a scam number. This is Canada Life who offers creditor insurance. I recently changed my mortgage and applied for mortgage insurance this call was in reference to some required medical questions so that the can confirm they can insure me.
I received a similar call, stating that my 'application' had some issues that were time sensitive and they needed me to call back and give them some information. I called RBC to confirm that this was not one of their numbers and that I had nothing outstanding.
Out of curiosity, I called the number anyway, blocking it just in case. They answering machine does not say the name of the company, but it has a few menu options. "Press 1 if you are looking for an estimate or have a project" - and other nonsense things that banks would not do.
This isn't a scam. If you have applied for mortgage insurance from Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC, this number is Canada Life Insurance calling to do medical underwriting questions with you because they insure all 3 banks. That is why they may tell one person they are from RBC & another they are from Scotia. Your bank rep is supposed to tell you Canada Life will call you but sometimes your banker will submit an application to Canada Life without telling you! They are owned by Great West Life Insurance so you might also get a call if you applied for benefits through your workplace that's covered by Great West. Read the fine print when you sign things, people! It says they will call to do health questions. I know because I have gone through the process and asked.
