Exactly right, incoming calls from Iran. My wife has tons of incoming calls, and this Friday morning was no exception (she's often off work Fridays). 99% of incoming calls from her family use what must be VoiP-related lines, but for the last year, there have been 2 or 3 times now that a number JUST HAPPENS to be one used by scammers. Scammers don't speak english, so that's a give-away to their intent. Please everyone, understand that there are those of us on this planet that don't take seriously the idea of being careful to jot down a phone number correctly, or dial it for that matter, accurately 100% of the time. This results in innocents getting Wrong Number Dialed -straffed. It's unintentional. Sometimes I would answer the phone to silence from the other end; since I don't speak farsi, the caller hangs up on me! Too embarrassed to ask for my wife sometimes, other times (I think) they honestly think they musta dialed the wrong number. So they don't say anthing, and the silence disturbed me, until I finally figured it out, it's just overseas family calling my beloved. They called right back, often via a different ~VoiP line, hence the understanding I've gained.
There are scammer autodialers though, I too have experienced the delay only to have someone come on and say "Hello?" as if they had no idea I was the responder. In this case, the autodial responder is definitely a scammer [if their # is associated with "You Won! Al*ah must love you!" rhetoric. It's free, completely free, all you have to do is pay shipping/etc.]
I appreciate this website. Numerous complaints citing nearly-identical sales pitches nails it: this number is used by the same scammer(s) straffing hundreds of us. Consider contacting your telco provider to block that bad-apple #. Comcast did just that for me when I was barraged with debt collectors asking for someone else. They axed about 20 #'s right after my detailed request. THEN after Comcast was so helpful in that area, I got a friendly email from them directing me to their call block feature I wasn't aware of. Unfortunately, only a maximum of 12 #'s can be specified/blocked, and this just doesn't cut it for all the incoming college loan -type scam calls. I need like 30, and even then would still have to cycle every now and then.
life story? yes we vent, but hopefully now someone's benefitted from a greater knowledge. these scammers are just trying to make a nickel for their family. don't condone harrassment; pass the ammunition
Pricks called my house at 4 am, and same as others dead silence, couldn't call them back. pissed me off because i was going to start calling them all hours of the night to see how they liked it. wish i could
Got the same kind of call, heavily Indian accented English ( caller ID reads "Dir Asst ON") looking for a specific person in my household. When I ask who was calling, they hung up. Also, the same from 917-555-3321 (Dir Asst NY). They continue to call, despite my number being on the State and Federal "Do Not Call" list. This is a total scam, give them no information. Record the numbers and report them to your State Attorney General.
