They ID'ed themselves as Toronto CIBC offices on the call I received. I waited on hold for an actual person and the system hung up on me. I tried calling back and I get a message saying the number is no longer in service. Be careful people as this has to be some sort of scam!
They called my husband at work saying it was our former mortgage company (we got a new mortgage the DAY before). They stated that this was a courtesy call, and asked my husband to confirm his name and mailing address (as some banks do).
They started to ask questions about our mortgage payments, and when my husband told the woman to call our financial advisor at our bank (who took care of paying off our old mortgage and arranging the new one) for anymore details she said "Well, I'm not authorized to speak to him." My husband thought this was kinda sketchy and asked "What is your name, and what is it that you want from me?" She immediately hung up on him.
My husband called the number back which went straight to the message "The number you have called is not assigned".
He then called our old mortgage company to enquire about this call, and they said they made no such call, and never call as courtesy unless someone signs up for a new mortgage from them. They were kinda freaking out that someone was posing as them and asking for financial info, they took this number and are investigating it.
My husband then Googled this nuber and saw how it was associated with ID theft scams.
My husband then called our bank to notify them of all this, and they said the only way that someone could get his info was through unsecured CIBC files - our old mortgage company is a division of CIBC.
We've contacted the police and are meeting with them today to formally file a fraud report.
