This same thing has happened to my father today. After car was broken into he had somethings stolen out of the car. Something VERY sentimental to him and his family was stolen and we got this same phone call and took the bait! The guy said he bought it off of a guy in a motel parking lot and was trying to find the owner. His name is engraved on it so we thought maybe he googled the name to see if he could find information on him Don't fall into these crooks stories. They are thieves and liars and out to scam anybody for YOUR money.
I just got scammed on this phone number about 2 hours ago. Called me on my cell phone which seemed odd and asked if I had lost anything. I told him that I had my car stolen last week and several items were stolen out of the car. He asked me to describe what was stolen. After my description he said that he had the item and wanted to get it back to me. I was very sceptical but because of the personal attachment to the item I agreed to send him several hundred dollars by Wal-Mart money gram with the password Brother with the reply Robert and he would UPS me the stolen item. Needless to say after he got the money I tried to call him back and as I expected No Answer and Mail Box Full. Live and Learn. I would like to catch the SOB.
Very similar incident--said name was "Greg Norris", and to use secret question, 'sister's name=Linda'--sounded VERY believable and helpful...unfortunately, didn't get suspicious till had sent money, and no tracking number came back to me as he had promised. He asked me for identifiable details about the lost laptop I had posted on Craigslist. Obviously, I should have been the one asking him details!
