Dave
A law Office claiming to representing 800 other online payday loan company the company called American cash. The called me with a ominous and vague message urging me to call. After calling a Indian lady spoke to me and read a said charge of fraud. After explaining that I've never heard that company nor was I approved for any loan and saw any change in my bank account with extra funds she proceeded to threaten me with jail time in the next 24 hours. After consulting with a fellow loan officer at a local payday loan branch she said that it was a scam as she has received no papers stating any charges with said company.  And has had repeated calls with the same premise but different approach however the voice remains constant and the play remains. They never stated a law office of any kind except "law office"

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

This number called me a couple of minutes ago...some guy stated that I have a legal case filed under my name and social security number and I need to get an attorney. Before he could go further, I told him I knew this was a scam & he hung up.

Don't feed in to these people. IT'S A SCAM! They most likely get your information when you do loans online. Be careful people.

Thanks for the insight.  I got the same call.  Always vague and talking about sending the law to my job.  Then they ask what is my address? Well, that explains a lot right there. Your info was helpful thanks and good luck.
