Checking your credit report is good but even before that you can find out if this is a scam by simply asking for proof of the debt from the caller. By law, they MUST send this to you via US Mail. Email, fax, and phone are NO GOOD. If they refuse to do this, claim they already sent it, or state you will receive it AFTER paying them you know it's a scam. NEVER pay someone over the phone, no matter what they claim.
I got the same voicemail today and they called my sister looking for me. Her husband is a Sheriff and said they were just talking about a scam just like what the caller stated in the voicemail and to my sister. Mrs Brooke who is supposedly the legal secretary told me when I called back that I missed my court date when I asked her to repeat the name of the company she speaks so fast and puts you on hold you can not understand what she is saying. I had to listen to the voicemail several times just to get the case# to reference. When I said how can I miss a court date when I don't know what you are talking about. She immediately put me on hold to wait for Mrs Vann. She started to verify last four digits of my social## which was very scary that they had that much, when I asked what this pertained to, the call was lost. I will be calling back just to find out the jist of all this mess. but sounds ironic that everyone is getting this same message from the same supposedly Legal attorney... SCAM!!
Then why in the world are you calling them back? It's at best a waste of time and at worst risky behavior. Just consider it a dead issue and never answer those calls again. Or better yet, bock the number(s). Problem solved.
