Do not give out any information to these non english speaking knee jerks. I have turned them over to my attorney, I will be taking them to court for fraud, harrassment and anything else I can throw at them.
Got a call from a guy who said his name is Frank Foster. He said a lawsuit was going to be filed the next day on behalf of a creditor unless I took care of the debt immediately. The creditor was real and although I thought I had settled my debt a long time ago, he had enough detail to scare me into thinking that legal action was in process. Unfortunately he got $500 out of me before I figured out what a scam this was.
Here's the confirmation of the scam from the New York City Law Dept. website: http://www.nyc.gov/html/law/html/news/notice.shtml
I too received a call. I just submitted a complaint to the FTC and my state Attorney General. I am contemplating my local police department. See my story below:
I received a voicemail on Friday, 4/20/2012 at 12:36pm stating that I need to return the call as this is a very serious matter. This person claimed to be named James. He did not state where he was from or his last name. James also stated
"that the issue at hand is time sensitive and left his phone number. Do not disregard this message, if I fail to return the call I will face legal consequences. Your social security number will be logged for three years. This has come up on your social and your employment will be affected. To avoid all this legal mess make sure you call us right back asap. Goodbye and best of luck for your legal day."
I called back at 12:56pm to find out who he was and was he was calling for. When he answered he asked for my SSN and information. I asked what this was for and he said for a payday loan back in 2008 and then stated the last four digits of my SSN. I then asked for verification and proper documentation to be sent to me. He refused and stated that they have attempted to email me and that they were taking me to court on Monday.
I said I need to see further verification of this debt and requested written documents. Again he refused and stated that he was going to call the Phoenix Police Department and have them come to my work and arrest me. He also knew where I worked and read me the address of my place of employment.
I then hung up. Five minutes went by and I received 3 missed calls from 602-262-6151 in the same minute. I called back to see who it was. It was the Phoenix Police Department. I stated that I received missed calls and was worried why they had called. The person that answered the phone said that if anyone called me it would have been an officer and that he or she would have left a voicemail with detailed information.
After I hung up with her, I had a voicemail. It was the same place that left the voicemail from earlier. There is a beep before the person speaks, just like in the voicemail from the so called debt collector. Also with a very heavy Indian accent, just like before. The voicemail states: "This is the Phoenix Police Department 602-262-6151." And that was it.
I tried to find their information online for an address, company name, etc. Nothing came up except similar complaints from several people across the nation.
They are scammers, but yes the scary thing is they have all your information. I'm gonna chase them down, They claim they are the New York City Law Department, which is a branch of The City of New York. They even were bold enough to give me the real address, but I could tell they weren't asociated with them. We all should report them to the New York Department of Investigation @ (212)825-5900
