They started by leaving me a message stating that I had committed fraud using my own name, phone number, email address, ss#, bank account number, etc. Then they said that I took out a Cash advance loan online in 2011 and that I never paid it back. I asked for more information because I knew that this was all a scam. All the caller would give me is his name "Eric Brown" and that he was representing attorney's office "VCF" out of CA. He was rude and overbearing and would not listen when I said that I was going to call the law.
A guy with a foreign accent left a message saying he was going to sue me for an unpaid payday loan which I have never done. The phone number I have is unlisted so how he got my name and phone number is suspicious in itself. I am pretty sure its illegal for a debt collector to flat out threaten to sue you if you don't pay, and he was dumb enough to leave a voice mail. The guy was rude to me when I called him back to tell him he had the wrong guy.
Have had 6 calls from this number, cannot understand the guy, but claims I took out a loan in 2008 on the internet, I never paid it back and if I do not pay it back, I will go to jail. Thats all I could make out. The scary thing is he had a LOT of personal information, what can I do to avoid identity theft?
