Recording the conversation is a good idea, but promising money under any circumstance is a very bad idea. These people are criminals trying to steal your money; they are no different than a mugger snatching your purse on the street. They are not legitimate debt collectors. Don't negotiate with them. Rather, record conversations and report them to the local police, the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission and your state's attorney general.

I just hung up with someone by the name of Robin Garcia (mind you, he had a very strong "Indian" accent). He also threatened that I would go to jail if I did not pay them 1100.00. They allege I took out an advance loan in 2005- and today is when they found me??? Someone needs to put a hold on this. The number they gave me to call them back is 540-658-2587, however it indicated "Private call" on my cell phone.
Robin Garcia called & stated I would be locked up if I didn't pay them by 2:45 pm the amount owed for two cash advance loans in 2005 totally with intrest $1600. I told him I don't recall that, I had a pay day loan before but I believe they were paid off and I don't have any money. So then he said well just send them $600 and they will settle the account out. It seemed fishy to me because if it was a real collection company first of all I don't see them taking away $1000 if I really owed that amount and then he was going to let me pay that amount a week later but he just said I had to have it in by 2:45pm. When I called the number back the next day (which he gave me the number of 678-954-0513) to reach him back on, I asked if I could have documentation of this settlement agreement and he said a letter would only be generated after payment was made and I would have to send the money through moneygram, but did not give me the moneygram information, he will give it to me when I'm ready to make payment. I called that same number at night to see if any type of answering machine would come on and it didn't even ring, I can never get through to that number at night, it only rings in the daytime and he always answers the phone. I believe this is a scam, I was scared at first but learing he has called other people with the same story, I'm not worrying about it anymore. If he calls back I will tell him that the conversation is being recorded and I need documentation before any payment will be made!!!!
I suggest taping the conversation (let them know you are) and request they send you documentation validating the debt they are attempting to collect. Under no circumstances should you send these people any money - they have proven repeatedly it is a scam. Keep your cool...
