Someone called 'Melle' with a thick Asian accent called. Said they were a debt collector and to call them back. That is not going to happen..apparently it is another scam
Was called by this number saying they were a debt collector and to call them back on a different phone number(it was a voice mail). It was obvious it was a scam so I texted them to stop calling me because they called several this this morning. I'm not even 18 and I've seen that actual debt collecters email you so I knew right away that it was a scam
If you are 18, then you need to learn about finances before you step out into the real world. First, texting them means nothing to them. It is not a legal valid form of communication. You cannot prove they received the text for starters. Second, actual debt collectors are required to send you stuff by US mail, delivered by the postman. Again, e mail is not a valid legal form of communication. If these are debt scammers, then they don't care whether you owe or don't owe or how old you are.
Please take the time to learn what you need to know before you end up as the victim of a crime.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
