Lol. Whew. You guys got me extremely nervous for awhile there, then I did some research.
Let me assure you, 866 379 3643 is not a scam number that you all led me to believe it was. I just spent 30 mins on the phone with AMEX to verify it is legitamate. Here is what I did to verify the number is not a scam:
1. went to www.americanexpress.com
2. looked for a customer service contact number under contact us
3. found 1-800-528-4800 on their US Contact numbers page
4. Called 1-800-528-4800 and spoke with a customer service agent who said I should speak with new accounts for my specific card application. The number for new accounts for the 'Blue' card is 1-800-962-7227
5. Called 1-800-962-7227 and they were able to verify that 866 379 3643 is the number for one of their many many local offices.
So there you go, you can trust 866 379 3643.
If you still don't believe me, call up any number on the american express website, then ask for a new accounts phone number for the specific card you are applying for; i.e. 'Blue', 'Clear' etc. Then ask new accounts to verify the call back number they left you.
Anyway, scam artists are getting more clever every day. Good job on staying on guard.
I still believe 602-766-6484 is a scam. If they would have left 1-800-DISCOVER as a callback and said they were from Discover I would still question the original number the call came from. I've contacted AMEX Fraud with 602-766-6484, they are checking into it & will get back to me.
recently applied for a amex card and just got the same call with a message from a woman with a thick accent (not sure of nationality). called back and the automated system asked me for my SSN#. myeah, don't think so pal! I'll be calling AMEX to verify it later.
got a call from an indian guy claiming he was calling from amex. and wanted 4 last digits of my ssn. talked to amex, they say this is not a number from amex. THIS NUMBER IS A TOTAL SCAM... but the weirdest part is they know everything, work phone, address, name -even my middle name which I dont use at all-
