My caller ID says this is a cell phone from Ithaca, NY. They called twice today and left the same message. It's only a fragment because the first part must have been played during my outgoing message: ". . . against you to get more information about this case file. Please call immediately on our department number is 607-319-6498. I repeat 607-319-6498. Thank you." This sounds like one of those classic fake IRS calls, the purpose of which is to get you to send them money immediately to avoid all sorts of horrible consequences. Of course the IRS doesn't make the initial contact by phone, and certainly not from a cell phone in NY. I don't even have the ringer on my home phone turned on, so it isn't much of an annoyance, but these criminals do get through to some gullible people or they wouldn't keep doing it.
