Apparently now they have a recording with the same message as those earlier posted. Officer with IRS (heavy Indian accent) calling to tell me a lawsuit has been filed against me. I hung up immediately. Scam.
Received a ROBO call from this number claiming it was VERY important for me to call them back at 620-371-0104. Thought it might be my insurance provider, so I foolishly called back. Some guy with a thick accent told me that there was a lawsuit being filed against me tomorrow in Federal Court, unless I wanted to settle OUT OF COURT today. Since the amount I owed was ONLY $13.11, the caller suggested that it would be simpler for me to just put that small amount on my credit card today and avoid all of the unpleasantness which would begin tomorrow. When I told him that I would need to consult with my H&R Block attorney, because she handled all of those matters for me - he became VERY agitated and insisted that the IRS would NOT deal with any third parties. I told him tat I would still need to consult with my attorney to get her opinion. THEN he asked me for my name! I gave him my middle name PLUS my maiden name and he whizzed right in and brought up my account right away. He then claimed that the IRS had sent a letter to me at an address where we lived THREE YEARS AGO and, although he rattled the address right off - I KNEW it was a scam by this time because I KNEW that the IRS had received our current address on their last return. However, he kept insisting that since I owed only such a small amount, the SMART thing to do would be to put the small amount on my credit card today and let the tax attorney sort things out for herself tomorrow. I figured by then that he just wanted to get my credit card account numbers, so I kept insisting that, although I WOULD consult with my tax attorney, I would call him right back as soon as I spoke to her - and got him to give me a name. So - in case anyone else gets a call from this guy, speaking VERY BROKEN English - Try giving him a made-up name first, then ask what address the IRS has supposedly been sending all of this mail to and - Oh, yes - Dude called my cel phone number. I always give my LAND LINE NUMBER to the IRS.
So - according to HIS story, the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me, using the maiden name which I haven't used in the past 35 years, was sending mail to an address where I had NOT lived for the past THREE years - and somehow, seemed to magically know my cell phone number even though the ONLY telephone number which I had EVER given to the IRS was my LAND LINE!
So - Since he had so kindly given me his supposed name and I had his telephone number - I called my IRS tax professional and gave all of his pertinent information to them. Checking in with the IRS with the Gavin Jones scam sounds like a good idea to me as well!
Hopefully, one day, I will read a news story about this guy going to jail!
