Also received a call from 646-367-0664 today at 8:35 am. Supposedly Kevin Mason (with a very heavy foreign accent) from the US Treasury who said the call had to do with federal criminal activity and we needed to call him to avoid action from a local grand jury or federal magistrate's office. This is a SCAM. Please do not respond to these calls. No one from the US government will be calling on the phone. All federal and state correspondence is by mail. Even with written correspondence, be sure to verify the legality of it before responding since many SCAM artist people are going that route also with fake documents. Local TV stations have reported on these types of calls many times. We get these calls on a regular basis. Do not let continual calls frighten you into talking to these people. Do not talk to them at all. HANG UP. Block their numbers if you can.
Said to call a phone number to contact a lawyer to represent us in a lawsuit by the IRS. Don't these scumbags ever give up? Probably a spoofed phone number. Just one digit off from another caller's report on 800notes.
Got a call from this number earlier today. I didn't answer but had the same mechanical/scripted voice mail message as previous posters: " *British accent* This is Kevin Mason blah blah blah US Treasury yadda yadda yadda legal action ooga booga do not ignore or else [*ghostly moan and rattling chains*]". So I deleted the message and blocked the number. I suggest you to reject the call and block the number if it shows up on your caller ID. Also, warn family members that may not be as hip to today's scams as the younger crowd may be. My friend's grandma fell victim to one of these overseas scams in the amount of $5000 that was lost forever. It was really sad.
Side Note: I know the National Do Not Call registry is only a list to deter telemarketing calls and I have gotten my fair share of them over the years but ever since I put my number back on it about a month ago, I've been getting way more of these and other various "hang up when phone is answered" calls. Now I just reject anything I don't recognize. The list keeps growing.
Another Side Note: I think they should maybe add "Scam" as one of the call types here. This number isn't a prank call, it's a scam call. Just a thought. ;)
