Please realize that:

» Your post here will NOT stop the calls .  We did not call you.  Your caller probably does not read these messages.  We cannot block calls to you.  We cannot put you on or take you off the list.  We do not know who you are, and we do not know your phone number!

Click_This_Line_for_Info_About_the_DNC_ListThe National Do Not Call list is respected by legitimate telemarketers, but is ignored by criminal telescammers.

Surveys, charities, political calls, NON-sales calls and certain preexisting business calls are exempt from the DNCL.

Business phones do not qualify for DNCL protection.

»YOU are your own best defense against unwanted calls! You can use a call blocking app, device, service or procedure to block such calls.

Click_This_Line_for_Methods_to_Block_CallsHere are some tried and true methods for reducing or eliminating repeated spam / scam phone calls:

1.  Do not answer the phone if you see an unknown number on your Caller ID ... let it go to answering machine or voicemail.  Many telescammers hang up after three or four rings.

2.  If you have a smartphone, get one of the inexpensive or free call blocker apps at your online app store, and learn how to use it.

3.  If your cell is not "smart", read the manual to learn how to set up a "group".  Assign the scammer's phone number to that group.  Also assign a "silent ring" to that group.  You will not hear future calls from that number.

3a.  Alternately, assign a "silent ringtone" as the DEFAULT ringtone.  Then, assign your favorite ringtones to friends, family, contacts, businesses, etc.  That way, you will not hear your phone ring, even if the scammer changes numbers!   (This is also called "whitelisting", and will cause you to miss calls from non-whitelisted numbers, so be careful!)

4.  For cell phones or landlines: Contact your phone service provider.  They may have a facility or method to allow you to block numbers.

5.  For landlines: there are several call blocking devices and services available.  Use your favorite search engine to find one.

6.  DO NOT call unknown numbers back without checking who called (800notes is your friend)! All that does is verify your number is "live".  Instead, read this:

Hey guys. Similat experience and im from NZ aswell, but I think I have an inkling to how they got access to out numbers.Got a call from an unknown number about 2 weeks ago, which I proceeded to answer to loud distorted background noise. I said 'Hello' but there was no reply, then the caller hung up. The next day I got a call from the same number whilst walking my dog, but this time someone did talk. It was a woman with a Canadian (I assume) accent who was offerring shares or investments of some sort. During our conversation I think she used my name (whereas at the time I did not actively acknowledge that it was strange
that a person calling from an unknown number). I ended it by apologizing and stating that I was not interested. 20 Minutes later when I got home I got another call from the samr number , except this time it was a male who also had a canadian accent. At this point I thought it would be fun to mess with him a little bit, so I told him I was poor and didnt have any money to invest. I then asked him if he was willing to send me free moneh or something (I was taking the mickey). Then said something and addressed me by my name and I made the connection. How does he know my name? I thought. So I asked him and he said he was given my information from his manager, I then proceeded to ask if I could speak to his manager and asked how his manager got my info. He said he was unsure and the my information was just given to him
by a 'higher up'. I then told him to hold on a second because I wanted to tell my mum that this stranger had my information and to ask if she had entered her or my details/numbers on any dodgey websites or something. She told me no. So I went back to the phone and he had hung up. About an hour later I get another call, but this time im pissed. I raise my voice and tell the caller that I already told them I want interested and to stop phoning me. That was the last I heard of them, or so I thought. Fast forward to today, I get an unknown call from Ontario, Canada . In my heaf im thinking 'oh god not these guys again...'. I pick and tell them im not interested in their sh*t and to never call again, then block the new number.

In an interesting conversation I had with my sisters boyfriend I told him that I had never entered my phone number nor name on any dodgey/suspicious websites as I highly vigilant when it comes to my personal infotmation. He then asked me if I had ever entered any competitions and then it clicked. I told him prior to that I had entered a Lift+ competition by texting in a code to a number. He told me that was it, and that these companies are often guilty of leaking backdoor information. IE certain employees sell peoples private information for little extra cash. Whereas, this must be criminal in some degree as its goinh against individual privacy.

So my question is have any of you entered any cash competitions by texting in codes to unknown numbers? Becaude if so, this could be the cause.
