This is a spoofed number from an East Indian Call Centre, likely Karachi, Pakistan. They call asking by name, and use any address published in the phone book - however they didn't know it was a condo complex. When I asked what they were calling for, they started the spiel about how I'd been 'selected' for the Ontario Home Eco Retrofit rebate program. This is some sort of scammer call.
There is a posting on Wikipedia addressing this – the site states it is unclear as to whether or not it is advertising.
There was a Canadian Federal Ministry of Natural Resources energy home retrofit program, that Ontario dropped out of in 2011; the program ended in June 2012 and the webpages have been Archived. There were prequalified vendors – but since the program is no longer active any company telemarketing and claiming to be part of this program is committing fraud. I used to work at the Ontario Ministry of Energy - so I know any calls claiming this particular program are FAKE.
Its the 4th attempt to me in 6 months. These crooks are trying to find 'live' numbers, and confirm your name and address - then ANY usable information that can be used to create Fake IDs, which are then used to commit fraud. See the RCMP Top Scams websites. Warn your elderlies and tell them to just hang up - hanging up on crooks isn't rude.
Report the faked number, date and time of the call to your local anti-fraud unit. In Canada you can email to
