I too received this message, and am currently filing a police report for identity theft through SYNCHRONY BANK as I had someone apply for a credit card with my information and social. It appeared as an inquiry on my credit report.

I have to deal with this [***] every year. Yes they area a scam. First the message they leave is an automated recording. Second lack of information given. If you notice everytime a big company reports a security breach with personal information being stolen this happens. Sad part is about 10 out of every 100 people they call fall for this stuff. Best advice block their number, don't call them back, open a free credit karma account to look at your credit report. Report them to the better business Bureau. If you happen to call them back ask for their business identification number, tax ID number, and address. I promise they won't have any or try to tell you it's private information when in fact it's public record. Truthfully [***] them. Most of these scams are operating out of the carribiean islands or the middle east. Just don't answer and don't call back...
