This number called asking for a "Mr. Jane Doe". I've had several calls recently that are scams. This one was obviously a scam since my name obviously isn't Jane Doe. I played along to see what he would say and when he figured I wasn't really Jane Doe he hung up. I called back several times and they just hang up on me.

There is not much  WE can do other than advise others about this scam.  They caller is in India or Pakistan.  Consider a call blocking phone or simply do not answer unknown numbers that call you.

Found the same message on my answering machine when I returned after two days away from home.  Accented voice identifying itself as a robocall from the IRS, they have evidence of my committing tax fraud, a letter came back as undeliverable, I or my attorney should call the number immediately, I should not ignore the call, if I do ignore it, "good luck."  Had me going for a bit because I did have a little misunderstanding with the IRS a few years ago that I thought had been completely resolved, but when I called the number it did not answer.  I was very relieved to see these posts.

Sounds a lot like the same people who have called me several times over the past couple years telling me that they are from Windows, I have bad problems with my computer, they can fix it, etc. etc.

You may be correct ... they may be the same people who call about "infected computers".

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:
