CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Attorney General Darrell McGraw is warning residents about a telephone scam attempting to trick people into believing they have failed to show up for jury duty.
McGraw says residents have reported receiving automated telephone messages claiming there is a warrant for their arrest for a failed jury duty appearance and threatens imprisonment. The phone calls claim to come from a federal or state court and tell consumers they can avoid jail time if they pay a fine with their credit cards over the phone.
McGraw said federal and state courts do not notify the public of jury duty by telephone. He is advising consumers not to give out personal information such as dates of birth, social security numbers or credit card numbers over the phone or on the Internet.

Oh my gosh this is crazy! I got a text from my husband that said my name was on a Failure to Appear in Marion county and to call the 24 hour number to find out why. My first question was, why would you have access to something like this at your job, and where the hell is Marion County. I did what all you did, and goggled the number,,, in white pages it only told me it was a land-line in South Carolina,,,, and then Marion, I don't even know where Marion County is,,,after I kept texting him he said calm down its a joke...not funny. I work as a therapist in juvenile justice,,,my mind was completely racing. I might have his bags and clothes packed on the front porch when he comes home,,,and after a while I will say "its just a joke"
My niece just sent this to me in a text and I knew I didn't have any failure to appear charges because I haven't got pulled over or gotten anything in the mail...I did jury duty a couple of years ago and I reported everytime I was supposed to and received a small check for my participation. I decided to look up the number 704-319-7254 when I asked her what site she was looking on and she wouldn't tell me... I still haven't gotten a response from her...SMH. I don't know why she would play like this since she is going through court issues and her mother called her to tell her she had to appear in court (true) or go to jail...she was hysterical.
