Got the same call from India this morning...claiming my computer was sending out error messages to Microsoft. I decided to play along...on my virtual XP machine! No personal data on there. The first guy was barely intelligible with a thick accent, and he quickly transferred me to a supervisor (sitting next to him).

Loaded up Teamviewer.com, downloaded the installer, gave him the login credentials, he connected up. Seems like it was a tag team: one guy on the keyboard and the other telling me all the bad news about my computer. He brought up IE and downloaded another installer program. He then brought up eventvwr.msc and explained how all the red error messages (garden variety windows system event notices) are from viruses and that they cannot be deleted by right-clicking on them (no kidding!). He then did a netstat and explained that all the IP addresses shown in the window are from virus people attacking my computer. What he was really looking for was my IP address. Then, he brought up task manager, and enlarged it to fill the whole screen. They then ping'd or ftp'd me to raise the processor usage graph to 100% from 0% - explaining that all the red lines were virus activity!

At this point they'd been on the line for 15+ minutes and I had to leave. I hit the close button on the VM window and left the phone off-hook. The part I missed was the sales pitch for the $250 anti-virus software that I needed to buy to remove the "viruses" from my Windows XP computer. They thought they had a live one this morning....I never let on that I'm an IT sysadmin.

The moral of the story: never, ever give someone whom you didn't call access to your computer.

Received a phone call from these 'computer' people.  I immediately said give me your name and phone number, so I can report you.  He starts arguing why should he give me his name and phone number and that he can access my computer without me.  I said why should I give computer access to someone I don't even know?  After I had to yell over his yelling, I hung up.  Weirdest phone call ever.

I answered the call. There was dead silence and then I was disconnected. They tried two more times but I had already put their number on my auto hang-up program.
