Same story. Got a recorded call from Steve Martin with the Dept. of Treasury. However the caller ID on my phone showed it was coming from Patricia Oster with the number 714-968-7329 which is the only reason I answered the phone. I called the number of Patricia and got a guy saying she wasn't home and that he had not made any calls. looked her number up and she lives in Huntington, Beach, CA. Then I returned the call with the number on the recording and Sean Michael (with obvious accent) answered and I asked to speak with Steve Martin. The connection was bad and he hung up.
Received a call this morning, but it was a tape recording saying they were calling from the Department of Treasury to contact "you" (first clue -- didn't have a name) about a very serious Federal Offense -- can't remember what else, but prison was implied if not said. I do remember it was a pretty bullying call. Believe it or not, the IRS is much nicer than that. Also, the Indian accent did also raise credibility issues.
Same trick different day - 2/18 - Steve Martin phone # 714-982-7329 called to tell me where is a warrant for my arrest from an error on my 2009 taxes and I owe $5,xxx dollars in back taxes. Said I was sent all the info in the mail in 2011 and I never responded so they are coming to get me, my driver's license, bank accounts, etc. He had my address and I said well what is it I should do (knowing it was a scam). Surprisingly he replied, well you tell me what you think you should do. I said - you called me - you tell me. He said he was just warning me they were coming and so I said let me speak to your Supervisor. After two minutes, 'Robert James' his supervisor who sound just like Steve Martin (both with Indian accents) came and reiterated the story. I said and just where are you calling from. He said the Dept of the US Treasury. I said they are in DC. Your area code is not from there. He said it was his cell phone and he only called to warn me and hung up. What a pathetic attempt to get money I am sure. If I hadn't challenged no doubt they'd have told me I could pay now and avoid. BEWARE!
Pretty much same scenario as all the rest on here. Recent reports in our area state the FBI is supposedly
looking into these type calls. Very irritating & disturbing since there are vulnerable persons out there
that might fall for this crap.
