Greg Kirk called and claimed he was calling on behalf of Police Conference of New York. He said he was repesenting this nonprofit organization and asking for a donation. When I asked for his phone number because the person he asked for was out he became very agitated and rude and hung up. This seems suspicious!
Did you ever stop and consider that while the real credible group is conducting it's fund raiser, scam outfits might be pretending to represent the real group? That would explain why they are willing to come to your home and pick up the money.
I was suspicious of this as well. So, I used the charity number (NYS 15-90-18) on the letter they sent after I wouldn't donate on the phone to look into it. They *are* a real organization, but their expenses vs donations is HORRIBLE. Click on their IRS filing for 2015 at the bottom of http://www.charitiesnys.com/RegistrySearch/show_details.jsp?id={D4B65707-C913-44E1-8A8F-89209E16C31E} and you'll see that they bring in $1.1 million in donations from the public, but spend $904k on professional fundraisers! They also get ~$250k from membership dues, and their president makes $98k/year salary, and another ~$50k in executive and officer expenses. In other words, their total amount used to do actual work for their members is likely less than ten cents/dollar. It seems like this org exists to funnel money to professional fundraisers, the executive committee, and a bare minimum amount goes to a PAC to lobby for legislation. I won't be donating any longer.
They are a scam and do not represent any of us Iaw enforcement. Best part, they called me and when asked how they help us in law enforcement the guy was stuttering trying to convince me a real cop he was legit. Get outta here.
