I got this call today. He said he was an attorney, he gave me a docket # and said I had to appear in court for money I borrowed and never paid back. $498. I knew this wasn't true but he had all my personal information.... Freaked me OUT!!!!
I received this call today. Caller identified as working for my local sheriff's office said there was a warrant out for my arrest and I had til tomorrow to turn myself in. When I questioned why he said he couldn't give me any more information, but could give me a number (this one) to call to find out more about the charges. I was panicked so I called trying to figure out if I really owed a debit or what. I was told it stemmed from a PayDay loan but was given the opportunity to file a OOCR form and pay $200 for the court filing/administrative fees already incurred which would suspendfurther action while working out a payment plan for the almost $500 owed. He had my personnel information. I said I had to talk with spouse and called the sheriff's department. I was told it was a SCAM that had been happening in my area. Beyond having my info my caller id was the actual local sheriff's number. Super scary! Closing my account just to be safe even though I didn't give him my account number. ---The thing that caused me to stop panicking and think about it is that both people the sheriff's rep and the attorney's office person had middle eastern or East Indian accents. Seemed a little odd that I would speak to 2 people in 2 totally different parts of the county with both having a bit of an uncommon accent.
They use name association and searches over the internet. Plus , who knows who is selling phone numbers anymore. 30 pieces of silver can turn granny into Judas.
