I get calls from multiple numbers from different states every day and every call has one thing in common. They are from some attorney office threating to serve me with court papers at my home or place of work. I accidentally answered once and it was an actual person ( usually it's a recording) and she said she has papers to serve me with between 9-11a tomorrow. I gladly accepted to finally see what this whole thing was about and they never showed up. They even go as far as harrassing my family to find me. Finally my husband answered and asked if they are the people that keep harrassing me and trying to scam money and they started to argue with him and hung up. I'm hoping that's the end of this madness. I don't owe anyone any money and even if I did its a civil matter not a criminal matter. Never received anything in the mail either, just annoying phone calls.

Collection scam.  Scammers are posing as collection agencies. I get several calls from unknown scammers who present themselves as, The Western Group,... D& B Associates,.. Assured Revenue,.. The Harman Group,...etc,.. whatever name that sounds athorative. When you try to Google the name of the company or phone # you quickly get results that they are shoddy scammers.

All of these different agencies (scammers) are trying to collect on the same old account (that has been paid) that shows up on my credit report for 7 years. It has been paid in full since last year but still shows on my report for 7 years. Access to batches of credit reports can be bought for nominal sums. They sift through these reports and select old debts to call. They represent themselves as "associated" or "calling on behalf of attornys offices". They infer that you are about to be served with legal papers in the hopes that you will be duped into clearing the matter up before the papers hit the courts. They do not legally own the debt. (look up "legal standing" related to debt) Only the correct agency that legally has "legal standing" can collect a debt. They pose as legal owners of the debt. They just bought the credit report list and hope a few of the people they call each day will stick.

Can you imagine the potential windfall monies that can be scammed from unsespecting citizens? Credit reports are bought for a few pennies. A scammer can prolly easily make 40 to 80 calls per day. IF 2 or 3 or 4 people are duped per day  at $500. to $2000. (the calls I would get were asking for $1800.00 to settle) Scammers  can easily generate $1000 to $2000 per day or 5,000 to 10,000 per week just from making scam phone calls. Remember unlike you or me, they do no work, produce no products or goods, provide no services. The just scam people. Pretty good gig if your a cheat or thief.

Unfortunattly if you fall prey to one of these posser scammers and pay them accidently, you still owe the correct legal creditor. Paying the scammer relieves you of nothing. You can still be sued and perssued and made to pay two times for the same debt.

My best advice is to totally ignore the scammers (After you Google them to make sure they are not legitimate) (You can also confirm with the local small claims department of your local courts or county seat as they will have records of all and any pending summons against you)  The scammers are looking for the fish that returns calls or responds. If you call or respond then they know that they have have a "live one" on the line and will work hard to reel you in. Do not respond, do not call back. They are looking for the easy score and if you are too much effort they move on to the next easier guy.

If you are actually served confirm that it is legitimate through your courts system. Much double checking can be done on the courts online webpage.

If after you check you DO owe money (pull up your credit report) you should contact the legitimate listed owner of the debt and work out arraingments or settle for a lessor amount lump sum if you can handle it.  Old monies owed only go away after YOUR States Statute of Limitations expire depending on where you live. It can range from 3 years in S.C. to 7 years in MI, to 16 years in WI and OH.  Google civil "Statute of Limitations" for your State.

I just got a call from a lady asking for my ex-husband. We have been divorced for almost 20 years and I have been remarried for the last 18 years. She apologized, said my cell phone number was somehow associated with his account and then said goodbye. Very polite and quick.

Now if I continue to get calls, my opinion may change.
