An interesting note is that the U.S. collection agency, with whom I SETTLED in 2005 by paying some ridiculous amount, never sent me a letter showing this. I had put a stop payment against Dishnet and it was the same amount as my payday loan and it crossed and voila the payday company wanted nothing to do with me. That I can understand and I settled w/collection agency. Cost me about $800 to borrow $200. Interestingly enough when I call original collection agency, person answering phone says "account is closed" but her manager handles the account. So I leave messages but no one returns call. These crooks will SELL these debts I think, and even though they act as if you are settling them (Western Union, etc.) they don't close it. Mind you I settled for like $380 on a $200 loan. I pay off my debts.
So THEY ARE CROOKS. It makes me cringe the whole thing.
I got the same call yesterday saying I would be arrested if I didnt pay them $600 for a debt I paid in 2005. if anyone has any info on this please email let me know as I have filed a complaint with the federal trade commission and they will need all the info we can give to prosicute these people.
thanks
I got the same call yesterday telling me to pay $600 ot I would be arrested. I have reported them to the federal trade commission and I urge everyone who received a call from them to do the same. Lets get them
yes, I am ANOTHER victim of these callers! i received numerous voicemail calls this past week from 718-831-7157. ALL where from men who seemed to be far east indian (or something like that). Whenever i tried to call back the phone would constantly ring and then a busy signal. But anyway, when i was actually able to reach the caller(s) the first gentleman identified himself as Roy Brown and said he was with the "united ??? Division" and that there was a class action suit being filed against my s.s.#. He said my name and wanted me to verify my s.s.#! when i asked what company he represented he said that i had to answer his questions first. Since I had a hard time with his accent, another caller was placed on the phone "Officer Roy Campbell". when I asked the company name one more time he said that it was the "united legal investigation bureau"! Well... he became upset/irate because i kept interrupting him. He told me to "shut my big fat mouth" so that he could finish the list of questions he had to follow! and when that didn't work he proceeded to tell me that the police would be at my home/job within 24 hours and come monday i would be arrested! :) I asked where this company was located and who were they representing. He told me it was located on 537 N. West Street and why did i want this information. (then he said "what? are you going to come visit my office or something?"!) He must have forgotten that he told me the "call was being recorded" :) then he slammed down the phone.
I, of course, called back because the whole thing seemed strange. This caller identified himself as "Travis" and asked if i could hold the line while he got a glass of water! (yes, this company REALLY has nerve)! I hung up. Unfortunately, i received TWO more calls/voicemails after i hung up!
NOW i have to contact the credit agencies. Unfortunately, I do not know if this company has my correct s.s.# because I wouldn't let them finish the sentence before I started asking questions!
EVERYONE PLEASE DO NOT verify ANY information (not even your name!) contact your local police immediately as i have.
I'm still laughing over that "class action suit against your social security number" line. Another one of their common nonsensical phony threats is that "We will download warrants against you." LOL! This would qualify as comedy if it weren't for the fact that they often succeed in stealing money from unsuspecting consumers.
In addition to reporting these crooks to your local police, you may also want to alert the Secret Service, the FBI, your state's attorney general, and the Federal Trade Commission. See my message above from June 14 for details.
I too received a call today - now in the past I have had a payday loan but when they call they don't give any information and say that I will have to pay thousands above and beyond the measly 110 I borrowed. Today the caller ID showed the number 52480189 (I didn't answer because it's not a regular phone number) and the message was from someone with a VERY thick West Indian accent and he said he had a case that would be filed under my social security number and I need to call him back at 718-831-7157 as soon as possible. I called back to tell him NEVER to call me again and that I filed a complaint with the FCC but the phone rang and then went busy.
