I received a call from this solar company - again - only this time I asked some unwanted questions that the salesperson tried to avoid, which I would not allow. To set the record straight, there is nothing free about this offer. " If you qualify " - every homeowner in the Commonwealth to a tax credit for a home solar system (to get details call the State Energy Office) or your Electric utility company. If you go along with this solar company's scheme, they will get your credit and charge you monthly lease fees. You will not own your solar system, so any excess energy from your system in the form of energy credit will go to the leasing Solar company, the energy credit you would receive if you owned the system. It requires a bit more work on your part to apply for the initial tax credit, to arrange for the system to be installed (by the way, there area number of reliable solar companies available in MA). You will have to finance the system. So why do it yourself ? Because if your home faces south and you have sun exposure for at least eight hours, you not only generate enough electricity to take care of your home's electrical needs, but if you produce excess, the utility is required to buy it back from you. This can be great to compensate for stormy days. The payback for the installation should not be more than maybe five years and the your electricity costs practically disappear. Do your research for buying your own system. I was in Greece this summer and was amazed at the number of solar panels on homes and apartments. It is the way of the future.
