NEWS FLASH: It's not actually VONAGE that is calling. The phone number is 'spoofed' and appears to be a VONAGE #... because that's what displays on your Caller ID -- but it isn't actually VONAGE.
If you want to sign-up or renew their phone service, YOU call them ... NOT the other way around. Call their legitimate customer-service line. If they solicit you -- BEWARE. You do not really know who is on the other end of the phone. Do not assume.
You cannot tell by the number on your Caller ID display anymore -- sorry, those days are gone.
These phone-spoofing scam-rings of criminals are growing everyday. This way, they get your personal information (the easy way) under the guise of a 'safe' business transaction because a certain percentage of people do sign up, albeit a small percentage. But then, they have personal information which is all they're really looking for. They can sell it OR use it for identity theft -- or do both.
When they call "potential customers" they think it's actually VONAGE and that they've just signed up for their service when that's not always true and their information may be used by these phone spoofing criminals for illegal purposes.
Nowadays, about 10% of the phone numbers on your Caller ID phone display ARE NOT the actual number of the caller -- so they cannot possibly ever be traced.
Spoofing phone numbers is easy -- if they have the App or the Software all they have to do is enter the number of their choice into their phone and it displays on the receivers Caller ID.
Spoofing should be illegal, but it's not.
DO NOT assume any number on your Caller ID display is the number of the caller.
A few months ago while I was out shopping, and no one was home, my (land-line) phone number appeared on my neighbors Caller ID display. So she answered the call thinking it was me. But, it was an unethical, unscrupulous collection agency that had been hounding her for years over a debt she doesn't owe.
She was shocked that I wasn't on the other end of the phone. I wasn't even home to have called her, but my (land-line) number appeared on her Caller ID phone display ... just one "spoofing" example of many.
Received call at 8:22am. Answered phone and waited few secs for agent to come online. Immediately told her they should not call at this hour of the morning. 2 people were still asleep in house. She went right into speech about fundraising no apology for hour of call. Hung up on them. I know fundraising companies can call even if your on the do not call list, but isn't there a time restriction?
