You should make a report anyway and demand that at the very least the police go to the media and report the matter to the local community. Print out this page. But as a practical matter there is little the police can do. The scammers will demand payment by untraceable means.
I know this scam has been hitting the northeast a lot recently. Most people seem to think it comes out of the Dominican Republic or some Caribbean country. Maybe Puerto Rico
I don't know, I have found articles and reports with these jerks using the same phone number since May 2014!!!! I have acquaintances that have been arrested for much less than what these guys are doing! It makes me even more angry that so many reports by so many people are being unheard by authorities. Authorities are giving off more excuses as to why the public needs to just let it go...yet, I know of innocent victims of cyber and so called harassment arrests it's pathetic! If I had only found reports of this phone number being used for a couple of weeks, I would understand the police resistance. I have found almost a year's worth of the same story from innocent unimportant citizens being abused with their consciences being put on the line! We are all important and something needs to be acknowledged by authorities! The fact that they don't allow you to report it is sickening to me! I tried to be insistent and even willing to sacrifice personal funds to catch them and was told to just let it go and that there is nothing they can do! Pathetic!!!!!!!!! The media is even tired of reporting on it...they have been for almost a year and it continues to happen with the same phone numbers...just know that authorities will do nothing. You will have to live with some sort of awkwardness that you know that authorities don't really care about you and/or your family as a victim and good luck with them filing any report!!!
Go back to the police department, ask to speak to the supervisor on duty. If that won't work, write a letter to the police commissioner. They should at least have some sort of press conference notifying the public about this scam. You may have to go to the media yourself.
The scam has been publicized by the media since March 2014. Media and enforcement give you the old,"...so sorry you have been through this, but this has been going on for so long and there is nothing that can be done...the criminals could be from...." and you can finish that sentence. Another phone call from another site where a guy was called twice also lists 774-262-5523 - also from Massachusetts. Even when calling Framingham Mass troopers where the area code originates, they supposedly can't do anything. No matter how persistent you are, all you can do is keep posting to sites like this and know that others have had to be victim to the same crap you have had to deal with.
