OMG! He just called me too! Theartning to have a warrant issued for my arrest if i didnt come up with the money in 40 minutes from the minute we hung up. He alomost gave me a heart attack, when i have tried several times to work out an arrangement with the collector, it should be a law to prevent these collection agencies from doing this!
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
Thanks Evan...I havent heard back from him since the other day! He even had a walkie talkie thingy in the back ground of the call to make it seem as if he were calling in my info to to have the warrant issued for my arrest. The debt thats owed is for a payday loan in which I can not repay at this time due to unemployment, after research I found that you can not be arrested for an unpaid payday loan.
This guy is a scam. He called my foster daughter who just had surgery and threatened to have the constable pick her up for 3 felony warrants. She has NO idea what these are for. She fled her house frantic and not knowing that the policy won't pick you up for unpaid debts. This guy should be thrown in jail!!
OMG ! I got a call from a "secretary" from the Office of Mark Jacob saying they had been trying to contact me all morning, they even called my old job! She said she was recording me and asked if I had legal representation for my case? I had no clue what was going on! She then transferred me to "Mark Jacob's" , he then started reading out all of my information to verify that it was actually me on the line. Old e-mail address and my social! I was so clueless as to what was going on. He then said that I was being charged with 2 felonies for failure to repay a payday loan from like 3 years ago! He stated that he looked through my file and realized I hadn't been in trouble a day in my life and that I was the only person that he was calling to give a heads up to, because he wanted to help me out. He was courteous and seemed really willing to help me out! Here I am freaking out because I don't even remember the loan or what he was talking about! (I'm thinking identity fraud) He then says I'll only be able to help you if you can pay $1,140 in about 40 minutes because I have to go to court! He then hung up! He called my work phone, which doesn't have a caller ID. So I started calling the County DA trying to search for this guy! Turns out it was a SCAM! I cannot believe I almost fell for it...Good thing for Google and sites like this! Now that I really read into what he was telling my I know you cannot go to jail for such a thing! Boy do I feel like a complete idiot! Now I know that scammers are real and try to go after anyone!
