Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I received a call and then a letter from CBHV Newburgh NY regarding a debt with NBT bank. I do not even have an account with this bank. And they also got my name wrong, but they sent the letter to my work address. Upon receiving the letter, I I called them and was rudely hung up on by someone there. She said since my name was wrong, I shouldn't open the letter, and should have the letter sent back to the sender. Should I just ignore this whole thing? I do not owe anyone anything.
I give them my lawyer's phone number when they let me speak, Otherwise, when I try to give them that number they hang up to me. They don't call me any more. If I have a legal problem, I have a lawyer...., so don't waste my time and I don't make waste yours. Regularly they hang up when I said that.
Yes, they handle accounts from all over the states. If you open a visa account and you're in Michigan are you confused when someone from let's say Delaware calls you? These companies give out cards all across the 50 states, so depending on where they place the accounts, that's where they collect on them.
Responding to a post made almost a year ago? Yeah, that poster is not going to be back to see your reply. And just because she got a call from this number doesn't mean she even owes money!
