I got a message from a friend who said she got $85,000.00 today from this group and my name was on the list of entitled people to receive money. I don't trust it. It is asking for information that they should already have if it is indeed backed by the US government. The ensuing conversation was in the form of a text. I asked several questions and quit conversing once the request came for my full name, address, annual income etc. I stopped all communication. I contacted them by text and then took the above action.

1,  What is the name of the group?
2.  Have you known your friend long, or is it merely a recent online acquaintance?
3.  Was this just a message sent on some social group?

She's a good friend and perhaps mislead also. No company name, 1st tipoff, She swears she got her money (check) today. She's not one to play pranks etc. But too much missing information to take this seriously. I'm very cautious.

Those messages weren't from your friend.  They were from a scammer who hijacked your friend's account/info.

Thank you for replying.  Several of us "800notes regulars" would be very interested in getting additional info, so we could protect/inform folks who may be subjected to the same "offer" (or scam).

Please advise your friend to take the check to her bank, and have the bank investigate it BEFORE "cashing" it.  Y'see, there are many scams in which the checks are phony, and the recipient suffers because they are asked to send the check-sender money for "taxes" or something similar ... and the good money disappears, and the bad check bounces.

The check should have the name and address of the sender ... please give us that info, as well as the name of the supposed "government backer".  Also, what company name & address are printed on the envelope that contained the check?  Does the envelope have a stamp or a pre-printed USPS payment thingie?  If there is a cancelled stamp, is the city of origin shown?

(Ask your friend to keep the envelope ... it may be necessary to provide it for a potential Mail Fraud case, after the bank tells her the check is no good)

Suggest phoning your good friend, and getting as much information as you can, to post here, or to verify qwerty's suspicion that your friend's internet account was hijacked.

Again, thanks for any information!
