I received a voice message that they were trying to make a delivery but, had wrong address. I returned the call and it went to a voice service. They returned my call and then had me to hold on while, a man (African American) got on and asked me my name and said he needed to verify who I was. From there, he stated I owed a payday loan and he worked for a collection agency called PDL Financial. I told him I didn't know what he is talking about. He continued to try to intimidate me with threaten garnishment, law suits, freezing my bank accounts, and going to court. He then offered me to make a settlement for a lesser amount. I told him to send me the court papers and I will deal with it then.
Ugh. I got a call saying they tried to deliver a parcel but it needed a signature. Left the number and same result - I got a voice mail.
I AM expecting a package so didn't know if this was it. But it was curious as my apartment leasing office signs for packages in most cases. I did give my call back number. Good to know this isn't legit if they call back. I believe the name she gave was Abby Lion or something like that?
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number. Please note that process servers do not ever call ahead. That way you can’t dodge them.
