This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
Scam, Scam , Scam - they wil claim you owe money fro something and are sbout to be arrested - they will provide no details ro proof as required by law. they all have middle eastern accents. CBS just did a big story on these idiots.
I'm glad this post was here... I got a call from them today while I was in a meeting. They didn't leave a voicemail, but I will be sure to let them know if they call back that I am not interested in a scam.
1. indian guy calls by the name of mike anderson. indians dont american names...1st red flag
2. calling me from the department of law and justice. what law and justice department??? indians are too stuck up and bougie to work at a law office..2nd red flag
3. case filed against me and my ssn. havent received a certified letter or subpena for this by mail or in person..3rd red flag
4. blocks number to call me and leaves a number with an extention to call back... what legal office calls you blocking their number and demand you to call them back!??..4th red flag
5. they call twice back to back after not leaving a voicemail the first time..very suspicious.
6. tells me that if i dont call back i will be arrested for maximum penalties.....slander!!!
7. called the number back from an untracable source and a indian lady picks up phone to ask how can i help you? she states no company name or that the call is being recorded for quality purposes..that is illegal. all collection companies are required by federal to state that piece of information whenever taking calls to make calls legal and you can filed a lawsuit against the company if they dont and you will win!!
8. claiming to be a legal office and really a collection firm...falsifying information as well as another lawsuit.
